What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a discovery that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is understood of his research, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear of that cave shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
