UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
