The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and excel out here.”
