The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
