Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to review the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Critical Points in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Post-war governance of the territory
Public Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released not a single person will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.
"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south, medics said.
