{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be permitted to just sprint across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA
"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to enter the track and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what happened following that moment"
