California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor stated when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, using his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has invited attacks from critics.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary disclosed plans to pull government money from California and threatened suspending the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy stated, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused fatalities and casualties.
His administration pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status repeatedly, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under federal law.
Duffy had previously indicated he was withholding $40 million from the state for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team said in a last month's statement countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recently conducted survey showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.
In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The notion that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I await who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
